Irish Paediatric Critical Care Audit

The Irish Paediatric Critical Care Audit (IPCCA) collects high quality data to measure the quality of care and outcomes of sick children in Irish paediatric critical care units (PCCUs). These data are benchmarked against pre-determined standards and compared to other units across the UK and taking specific actions to improve quality of care.

Key Findings

IPCCA 2021-2022 Report

The Irish Paediatric Critical Care Audit (IPCCA) reports on the care of patients in paediatric critical care units in Ireland. The Irish Paediatric Critical Care Audit National Report 2021-2022 presents data on 3,329 infants, children and adolescents who were cared for across the two PCCUs in CHI at Crumlin and CHI at Temple Street over the 2 year period.

Patients

I was invited to join the IPCCA committee of NOCA in 2022 as a PPI representative on behalf of Heart Children Ireland. I began advocating for children and families who use the ICU after my third child, Anna, was born in 2019 with Complex Congenital Heart Disease. Anna spent many weeks in the Paediatric ICU in CHI at Crumlin, and, after multiple open-heart surgeries, Anna is a lively happy pre-schooler today thanks to the excellent standard of care she received.

The aim of NOCA’s management of the national clinical audits is to achieve high standards of patient care and improve outcomes for Ireland's sickest children. PPI representatives like me engage with NOCA to provide the patients and families perspective on the data, ensuring that there is nothing about us without us.

I look forward to seeing the improvements that will be made in the care of children in ICU as a result of the analysis and recommendations arising from IPPCA reports.
