The IHFD hosted a workshop for physiotherapists involved in the care of hip fracture patients to discuss the new mobilisation standard. The workshop had great attendance from colleagues across the acute, rehabilitation and community care settings.

In 2020, a new Irish Hip Fracture Standard (IHFS 7) was introduced into the Irish Hip Fracture Database, which stated that patients with a hip fracture should be mobilised on the day of or after surgery by a physiotherapist. In 2022, this will become part of the Best Practice Tariff payments to hospitals who achieve all Irish Hip Fracture Standards.

The workshop ensured that all physiotherapists were clear on what the standard involved, and also discussed future plans for the IHFD, such as scoping the introduction of longer-term outcomes for this vulnerable cohort of patients. The intention is to create a network of physiotherapists involved in the care of hip fracture patients to support the work of the IHFD and ensure all stakeholders have the opportunity to participate in the audit.
