Jim Daly T.D., Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People today launched the Irish Hip Fracture Database National Report 2016 at the Irish Hip Fracture Meeting in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Last year, in Ireland, 3,629 patients aged 60 years or over were hospitalised following a hip fracture. The IHFD collected data on 3,159 cases from all sixteen acute hospitals which accounted for 86% of all hip fracture cases nationally.

Speaking at the event, Minister Daly said “Robust quality data is needed to inform decision making and it is great to see that all 16 eligible hospitals are now recording data on hip fractures, such that hospital performance on this important issue, especially for the elderly, can be judged against an international standard.

KEY FINDINGS

  • 14% patients admitted to an orthopaedic ward within 4 hours.

  • 6% patients went straight to theatre from the emergency department.

  • Increase in percentage of patients having surgery within 48 hours (75%).

  • 77% of patients were mobilised on the day of or day after surgery.

  • Increase in percentage of patients seen by a Geriatrician (56%).

  • More patients received a bone health (57%) and falls (54%) assessment to prevent further falls and fractures.

  • Median length of stay has reduced to 12 days.

  • Data coverage (86%) and data quality (98%) has improved.

  • This report includes individual hospital comparison across six key care standards and highlights huge variation in hospital performance across all six standards.
