HIPFEST 2024 - Celebrating 10 years of data from IHFD

HIPFEST 2024, celebrating 10 years of data from the Irish Hip Fracture Database, was held on the 21st May 2024 in RCSI. The event saw over 200 healthcare professionals, managers, researchers and patients advocates gather to celebrate the advances in hip fracture care over the last decade.

HIPFEST 2024 celebrated the significant achievements and advancements in hip fracture care over the past decade. With over 200 attendees, the event was a testament to the dedication and passion of healthcare professionals committed to improving patient outcomes.

Highlights

Professor David Marsh and Professor Finbarr Martin kicked off the event with an insightful keynote address on the global evolution of collaborative hip fracture care. They emphasised the importance of international cooperation in driving advancements and standardising care practices worldwide. Dr. Emer Ahern delivered a compelling presentation on the importance of measuring what truly matters to patients. Her focus on age-friendly care pathways highlighted the need for tailored approaches that prioritise the unique needs of older adults.

Louise Brent provided a comprehensive history of the Irish Hip Fracture Database (IHFD), showcasing its evolution and the significant impact it has had on improving hip fracture care in Ireland. The IHFD's ten years of data collection and analysis have been instrumental in driving quality improvements. Sadie, a 99-year-old lady who suffered a hip fracture in October 2023, shared her personal story with the audience. Her moving account highlighted the human side of hip fracture care and underscored the importance of compassionate, patient-centred approaches.

Among the five oral presentations selected from over 40 abstracts, Dr. Evelyn Hannon from Cork University Hospital was awarded the top honour. Her presentation, "Sip Til Send: The End of Prolonged Fasting Time for Hip Fracture Patients," showcased an innovative approach to reducing fasting times and improving patient comfort. Dr. Cristina Ojeda-Thies shared valuable insights from the Spanish Hip Fracture Audit, emphasising the importance of capturing hearts and minds to ensure excellent participation. Shanice Vallely and Dr. Niamh O'Regan presented on the formation of networks through the IHFD, including groups for Orthogeriatrics and Physiotherapy.

Dr. Mary Walsh and Dr. Niamh Merriman highlighted the potential of using IHFD data for research with their HipFORGE and HipCog studies. Their presentations demonstrated how clinical audit data can drive impactful research projects. Eimear O'Donovan discussed the integration of surgical site infection data into the IHFD, underscoring the importance of comprehensive data collection for improving patient outcomes. Dr. Murray Connolly shared insights on the use of regional analgesia in hip fracture pathways and discussed how these practices could be adopted nationally to enhance patient care.

Professor Antony Johansen provided valuable lessons from the UK National Hip Fracture Database, focusing on timely data, nutrition, and the importance of prioritising 120-day follow-ups. From over 35 fantastic poster presentations, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Hip Fracture Governance Committee was awarded the top prize for their poster titled "Reducing the Risk of VTE in Hip Fracture Patients." The award was accepted by Mary Mullen, ANP, Ortho-Geriatrics.

Marking their commitment the IHFD, Dr Philip Crowley presented Dr Emer Ahern and Mr Conor Hurson with their very own "Golden Hips" as they handed over the baton to the new Clinical Leads, Professor Tara Coughlan and Mr. Terence Murphy. We eagerly anticipate the future advancements that the next decade of the IHFD will bring. The event saw excellent attendance and engagement from the diverse audience. Attendees actively participated in panel discussions, visited poster presentations, and took advantage of networking opportunities with sponsors.
