The Irish Hip Fracture Database National Report 2023 was launched via webinar on the 12th November 2024. The event brought together over 200 delegates who tuned in to learn about the key findings are recommendations arising from the report, as well as hearing from experts involved in hip fracture care.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

  • Welcome Address: Professor Deborah McNamara, President, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), opened the webinar, emphasising the importance of continuous improvement in patient care.

  • Report Launch: Professor Tara Coughlan, Clinical Geriatrician Lead for the IHFD, presented the key findings and recommendations from the 2023 report, highlighting advancements and areas for further development in hip fracture management.

  • Surgical Site Infection Data: Thérèse Dalchan, Head of Service and Eimear O'Donovan AMRIC Acute Services, discussed recent data on surgical site infections and announced plans for new guidelines aimed at reducing infection rates.

  • SSI Cost Analysis: Lucas Codyre, Researcher from NOCA provided an analysis on the economic impact of surgical site infections, spotlighting the cost implications for healthcare.

  • Long-Term Outcomes: Dr. Mary Walsh, HRB Postdoctoral Fellow with the HipFORGE project, shared insights into the long-term outcomes of hip fracture patients.

  • Golden Hip Award 2023 Winners: St. James’s Hospital’s 'Code Hip' initiative has set a new standard in hip fracture care. Their multidisciplinary, data-driven approach and innovative care pathway have earned them the Golden Hip Award 2023.

  • International Perspective: Dr. Hanne-Eva van Bremen, a researcher from the Dutch Hip Fracture Audit, provided an international viewpoint, sharing experiences and lessons learned from the Netherlands' approach to hip fracture management.

  • Irish National Falls Audit: Dr. Rob Briggs, National Clinical Lead for the Irish National Falls Audit, introduced the new audit, which aims to address and reduce fall-related injuries among our older population.

  • Trauma System Update: Mr. Keith Synnott, National Clinical Lead for Trauma Services, provided an update on the national trauma system, highlighting improvements and future plans to enhance trauma care services.

  • Closing Remarks: Mr. Terence Murphy, Clinical Orthopaedic Lead for the IHFD, concluded the webinar by reiterating the commitment to improving hip fracture care and expressing gratitude to all contributors and participants.

This year’s IHFD report and launch event underscore NOCA's commitment to data-driven improvement, collaboration, and excellence in hip fracture care.
