Irish National Orthopaedic Register National Report 2015-2024 Image

This is the second report from the Irish National Orthopaedic Register (INOR), presenting ten years of national data on hip and knee replacement surgery in Ireland.

The report includes 43,291 hip and knee joint replacement procedures recorded across 17 public and private hospitals, providing the most comprehensive picture to date of joint replacement surgery in Ireland.

Key Findings

This report presents national data on 43,291 hip and knee replacement procedures, providing insight into who receives joint replacement surgery and the outcomes achieved. Osteoarthritis was overwhelmingly the main indication for joint replacement surgery, with the average age of patients undergoing hip replacement at 70 years, and 72 years for knee replacement.. The findings show very low rates of infection, complications and mortality, while patient-reported outcome measures demonstrate sustained improvements in pain, mobility and quality of life following surgery. The report also highlights the broader health profile of patients undergoing joint replacement and the value of national registry data in monitoring outcomes and supporting improvements in care.

Key Recommendations

Recommendation 1

To progress the implementation of INOR to all sites providing surgery for hip and knee arthroplasty and expansion to include other joint arthroplasties in order to have a full national registry of hip, knee and other joint implants to support recall and ensure patient safety.

Recommendation 2

NOCA will conduct an organisational survey of all participating sites to document the patient pathways, resources, policies and procedures in each hospital during 2026.
