This is the third national audit of the organisation of acute hospital stroke services in Ireland and the first under the governance of the National Office of Clinical Audit. This report describes the organisation of acute hospital stroke services based on a self-reported questionnaire submitted by all hospitals providing acute stroke services in Ireland in September 2021

Key Findings

The findings show that the number of stroke units in Ireland increased from 21 in 2015 to 24 in 2021, and the number of stroke unit beds increased from 150 in 2015 to 239 in 2021. 88% of stroke units operate below the recommended nurse staffing level.
