NAHM What we measure

To analyse mortality patterns, data is collected by the hospital inpatient enquiry (HIPE) system and provided by the Healthcare Pricing Office (HPO) of the Health Service Executive. Each patients diagnosis is assigned to one of 260 Clinical Classification Software groups (CCS). These are clinically meaningful groups which have been developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) This system reduces all 16,000 ICD-10-AM codes in manageable diagnostic groups.

The following variables are included in the criteria:

  • Age on admission

  • Gender

  • Admission type

  • Admission source

  • Number of emergency admissions in the previous 12 months

  • Co-morbidities (pre-existing illnesses)

  • Indicator of Deprivation

  • In-hospital palliative care treatment.
