Irish National Audit of Stroke National Report 2023

Irish National Audit of Stroke National Report 2023 Image

This is the fifth report from the Irish National Audit of Stroke (INAS). This report presents the key trends in acute stroke care for 5,810 cases across 23 hospitals in 2023. This report aims to shine a spotlight on the population of cases who receive thrombolysis and, just as importantly, on those who do not receive thrombolysis. This report also aims to present the care provided to those who had a stroke while already in hospital with another condition (in-hospital stroke).

Key Findings

The report shows an 8% increase in stroke admissions recorded between 2022 and 2023, with 6,461 patients admitted with a stroke diagnosis. Timeliness of care improved, with the median time from hospital arrival to medical review decreasing from 14 minutes in 2022 to 9 minutes in 2023. Thrombectomy rates increased to 11.2%, nearly three times the rate reported in the UK, reflecting Ireland’s leading role in stroke treatment innovation. Stroke unit admissions remain static at 70%, below the 90% target.

The INAS National Reporting Table 2023 report presents the findings from analysis of the complete dataset, by hospital.

Key Recommendation

The INAS should complete an organisational survey of all hospitals providing acute stroke care.
