With 98% national data coverage and 4,356 cases reported across 16 hospitals, the Irish Hip Fracture Database National Report 2025 highlights continued improvements in the quality of care for older adults following a hip fracture, a serious and life-changing injury. In 2025, all seven Irish Hip Fracture Standards (IHFS) improved compared with 2024, while achievement of the Best Practice Tariff reached its highest level since its introduction in 2018.

Key Findings

In 2025, all seven Irish Hip Fracture Standards (IHFS) improved compared with 2024. Timely admission to an orthopaedic ward or theatre within four hours increased to 39%, a three-percentage-point improvement, while 79% of patients received surgery within 48 hours. The proportion of patients developing a pressure ulcer decreased from 4% to 3%, and achievement of the Best Practice Tariff reached its highest level since its introduction in 2018, at 24%. Despite this progress, timely admission remains a challenge, while nutritional risk assessment (75%) and delirium assessment on admission (61%) remain important areas for further improvement.
