With data coverage at 93% (3983 cases) from 16 hospitals, the report highlights a decade of progress in improving the outcomes and quality of care for older adults following a hip fracture, which is a life-changing injury for Ireland's ageing population. In 2023, five of the seven Irish Hip Fracture Standards (IHFS) saw continued improvement from 2022.

Key Findings

During 2023, five of the Irish Hip Fracture Standards continued to improve, including the time to surgery, percentage of patients seen by a geriatrician/ advanced nurse practitioner (ANP), percentage of those receiving a specialist falls assessment, and early mobilisation. The most notable improvement was in Standard 1, the percentage of patients being admitted through the emergency department (ED) within four hours, which improved by eight percentage points. Two standards disimproved by one percentage point each: the standards for pressure ulcer development and bone health assessment.
