NAHM How it works

Every NOCA audit is grounded in high standards, partnerships and good governance. NAHM analyses Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE) data for the purpose of identifying and trending mortality patterns in acute hospitals in Ireland. It does this by extracting data using a web-enabled interactive online tool, developed by the Health Intelligence Unit, HSE. This is one of the suite of National Quality Assurance Information System (NQAIS) tools.

Data is standardised to take into account factors known to affect the underlying risk of death in hospital, such as age, gender, existing co-morbidities, type of admission (emergency or elective) etc. This ensures that the best use can be made of available information in supporting hospitals to drive improvements in healthcare.
