IFLSD Background
The Irish Fracture Liaison Service Database (IFLSD) is Ireland's national clinical audit of the care provided by participating Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) to patients aged 50 years and older with a non-hip fragility fracture. Established in 2020 by the multidisciplinary FLS-DB Steering Committee, the audit was developed to support structured data collection, benchmarking and reporting across participating hospitals, with the aim of improving secondary fracture prevention and reducing the risk of subsequent fractures.
Today, IFLSD collects and reports data relating to patients referred to and managed by participating FLS and measures performance against 11 key performance indicators (KPIs) based on the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Capture the Fracture® Best Practice Framework. These internationally recognised standards support benchmarking, identify variation in care, and enable hospitals to evaluate and improve the assessment, investigation, treatment and follow-up of patients following a non-hip fragility fracture. Throughout the development of the audit, Crown Informatics has provided technical management and support for the database and reporting infrastructure.
The audit transitioned to the governance and operational management of the National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA) in March 2026, representing a significant milestone in its development. Building on the foundations established by the FLS-DB Steering Committee, participating hospitals, clinical stakeholders and Crown Informatics, IFLSD will continue to support quality improvement, service evaluation and national reporting, while enhancing data quality, strengthening reporting capabilities, expanding participation and providing a robust evidence base for secondary fracture prevention in Ireland.
